What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are dilated capillaries located close to the skin’s surface. They appear small and thin and may look red, purple, or blue. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins are not typically raised or bulging.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Like varicose veins, spider veins are caused by vein disease. Risk factors that can cause spider veins are:

  • Family history of vein disease: Most people with a family history will get spider veins.
  • Jobs that require long periods of standing: Veins have to work harder to pump blood up towards the heart.
  • Obesity: Can add extra pressure on leg veins causing valves to weaken.
  • Pregnancy: Increased blood flow and extra weight can induce spider veins.
  • History of blood clots: Damage to valves can cause them to malfunction.
  • Use of birth control pills: Influx of estrogen can weaken vein valves.

Do I Have Spider Veins?

The most common sign of spider veins is discolored veins that appear red, blue, or purple. However, spider veins can develop without any visible signs. Common signs and symptoms of spider veins include:

  • Swelling
  • Leg restlessness
  • Tingling or numb sensations
  • The feeling of burning or itching
  • Tender or red around veins

What Are the Risks of Spider Veins?

Spider veins do not pose an immediate risk to your health, but over time can develop into more serious conditions if left untreated. These conditions include blood clots or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which require medical attention.
